12 min · 2 worked examples · 3 questionsFree

The document that tells you everything, and how to find the parts that matter.

After this lesson you can

  • Find the three sections that answer most questions
  • Tell typical from maximum, and design against the right one
  • Spot the note that changes everything

What a datasheet is for

A datasheet is the manufacturer's complete specification of a component: what it does, the conditions it needs, how it behaves and how to connect it. It is the primary source. A forum post might be wrong or describe a different revision; the datasheet is the authority.

They are often intimidatingly long, a microcontroller datasheet can run to hundreds of pages. You are not expected to read it cover to cover. You are expected to know how to find the four or five things you actually need.
